Ama Johal
Ama Johal is a Professor of Orthodontics & Consultant Orthodontist at Bart’s and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry. He qualified in dentistry at Sheffield University in 1989 with honours and completed the Membership in Orthodontics (Royal College Surgeons, England) and Masters Degree in Orthodontics at Bart’s and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry, graduating with distinction in 1996.
Both his clinical and research work has been rewarded with numerous national and international prizes from The British Orthodontics Society, European Orthodontic Society, British Dental Association, The Craniofacial Society of Great Britain, The General Dental Council and The Society for the Study of Prosthetic Dentistry. He is an invited lecturer both nationally and internationally, appearing as a guest speaker at numerous conferences and has published widely in international journals.
Both his role as a Consultant Orthodontist and his additional training in children’s dentistry have equipped him with the skills to provide the very highest standards of patient care, in a reassuring manner. His specialist clinical interests include providing care for patients with missing teeth and the management of adult patients with periodontal considerations. He has been in private practice within Essex for the past seven years and remains very committed to the region for performing orthodontics in Essex.
Marta Calderon
Marta became a dentist following her grandad, father, and older brothers’ careers. She studied at the European University in Madrid (1998-2003) followed by further studies at University Complutense in Madrid for her Master’s degree in Orthodontics (2003-2006).
In the following years, she worked in several of her families private practices in Madrid.
Marta made the decision to move with her husband to England in 2010. Since then she has been providing exclusively Orthodontic treatment for the NHS, a local Hospital, and in private practice.

Is orthodontic treatment painful?

The process of fitting braces is generally painless, however depending on the type you’re opting for, a bit of discomfort may be expected.
As your teeth are being forced into a new position, you’re likely to experience some dull discomfort during the days following your fitting. This is normal and can be treated with regular pain killers. It should pass within a week or so.
How often will I need to visit my orthodontist?
The simple answer is it depends on the severity of your case and the type of brace.
As a general rule of thumb for our orthodontic patients, we recommend that you visit our practice every 4-6 weeks. This way, we can determine whether the treatment is working, tighten the braces, replace wires, or make any other necessary adjustments.
However, we assess every case individually and will always advise you if you need to attend more or fewer appointments.
Am I too old to receive orthodontic treatment?
As orthodontics has advanced, we have seen a huge rise in adults wanting to improve the appearance of their smiles. That’s largely down to the discreet solutions now on offer such as Invisalign. The good news is, our treatments aren’t age-restricted. In fact, we have several patients who have come to us for orthodontic treatments later on in life.
